The CB United Boys 96 Navy team (ages 14 and under) continued its winning ways this weekend in Portland, beating Tynecastle FC from Everett, 4-3 to bring home to the
Columbia Basin the first ever Pacific Coast Super Cup.
The Pacific Coast Super Cup is a Northwest regional tournament which includes teams from Oregon, Washington and Idaho, and is sponsored by US Club Soccer. This year the tournament took place over two weekends—the first weekend being held at the Starfire Sports Complex, home of the Seattle Sounders FC, and the second weekend being held in Portland.
United cruised through the first weekend, dominating both its matches, finishing the initial leg tied for first with two other teams. The second weekend began the same way, with United cruising to two more positive results, setting up a showdown with Issaquah Soccer Club’s Arsenal for the chanced to move on to the finals. The Issaquah match was a scrappy affair with one of the United players being shown a straight red card early in the second half for an allegedly illegal collision, which impeded an obvious goal scoring opportunity. The questionable call created quite a stir but in the end United was forced to play a man down for the balance of the match, and the carded player was suspended for the final match as well.
The championship match pitted United against a familiar foe in Tynecastle FC. The two teams have locked horns 5 times over the past 2 years, with Tynecastle coming out on top in 3 of those matches. Monday’s match “was one of the best youth soccer matches I have ever watched,” said Tom Atencio, US Club Soccer national board member and tournament co-director. The lead changed a total of 4 times, with United falling behind twice; but also fighting back twice to regain the lead before the final whistle, when CB United was declared champions.
